Discover the Charm of Kishiwada: History, Hidden Gems, and the Danjiri Festival

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of exploring Kishiwada, a city famous for its traditional Danjiri Festival, one of Japan’s most energetic and exciting local festivals. While the main festival takes place in September, we were lucky enough to witness a real Danjiri float in action in October!

Our tour began at Kishiki Shrine, a historic Shinto shrine where visitors can feel the spiritual heart of the town. The surrounding streets reflect the charm of traditional Kishiwada, giving a glimpse into its rich cultural heritage.

Next, we visited Kishiwada Castle, originally built in the 16th century. The reconstructed castle offers panoramic views over the town and provides a sense of the castle’s historical significance as a center of local governance and defense.

For lunch, we stopped at Gofūsō, a hidden gem tucked away from the main streets. Overlooking a serene Japanese garden, the restaurant serves local specialties in a peaceful setting—perfect for a relaxing break amid sightseeing.

In the afternoon, we explored the Kishiwada Danjiri Hall, a museum dedicated to the Danjiri Festival. Visitors can learn about the festival’s history, see traditional floats up close, and even try interactive experiences year-round. By coincidence, the timing of our visit allowed us to take a short taxi ride to Higashi-Kishiwada Station and witness an actual Danjiri parade in the streets—a thrilling, unforgettable experience.

This tour is ideal for travelers interested in Japanese history, culture, and unique local experiences. Even if the festival is not taking place, the Danjiri Hall allows year-round interaction, making this tour a highly recommended addition to any Kansai itinerary. For those lucky enough to time their visit with the festival, witnessing the Danjiri floats in action is an experience not to be missed!
